Treatment-Resistant Depression

When nothing else has worked, a different path may be possible.

If you’ve tried multiple medications, therapies, or approaches and are still struggling, you’re not alone. Treatment-resistant depression can feel discouraging, exhausting, and at times, hopeless.

At Reunion Psychedelic Therapy, we offer a different model, one that combines evidence-based psychotherapy with carefully guided psychedelic-assisted treatments to help unlock meaningful change where other approaches have fallen short.

What is Treatment-Resistant Depression?

Treatment-resistant depression (TRD) is typically defined as depression that has not improved after trying at least two standard treatments, such as antidepressant medications or traditional therapy.

For many, this can feel like being stuck, wanting relief, but not knowing where to turn next.

A New Approach: Psychedelic-Assisted Psychotherapy

Rather than only managing symptoms, our approach focuses on creating the conditions for deeper psychological and neurological change.

We offer a structured, three-phase process:

  • Preparation – Comprehensive assessment, intention-setting, and psychological readiness

  • Facilitated Experience – Carefully monitored sessions in a safe, supportive environment

  • Integration – Ongoing therapy to help translate insights into lasting change

Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)

A breakthrough option for treatment-resistant depression

Ketamine is one of the most well-established psychedelic-assisted treatments for depression and has been widely studied for its rapid antidepressant effects.

What makes ketamine different:

  • Rapid relief – Many patients experience improvement within hours to days

  • Works differently than antidepressants – Targets glutamate and supports neuroplasticity

  • Interrupts rigid thought patterns – Can help “reset” entrenched depressive loops

  • Enhances therapy – Creates a window for deeper emotional processing and insight

At Reunion, ketamine is always paired with psychotherapy and delivered in a carefully supported environment by trained clinicians. Our focus is not just symptom relief, but meaningful, sustained transformation.

Psilocybin-Assisted Psychotherapy

Available through Health Canada’s Special Access Program

Psilocybin (the active compound in “magic mushrooms”) is emerging as one of the most promising treatments for depression, particularly for individuals who have not responded to conventional care.

At Reunion, psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may be accessed through Health Canada’s Special Access Program (SAP), following medical and psychiatric screening.

Why psilocybin shows promise:

  • DeepDeep, meaningful experiences that can shift perspective and emotional patterns

  • Reduced activity in rigid brain networks (such as the default mode network)

  • Increased emotional openness and connection

  • Potential for lasting improvement after limited sessions

This approach is carefully guided, with a strong emphasis on preparation and integration to support safety and long-term benefit.

Why Reunion?

  • Psychotherapy-first model – Treatment is grounded in deep therapeutic work, not just medication

  • Experienced multidisciplinary team – Licensed psychologists and nurses trained in working with expanded states of consciousness

  • Evidence-informed care – Integrating approaches such as EMDR and trauma-focused therapies

  • Supportive, non-clinical environment – Designed to feel safe, comfortable, and human

  • Group and individual options – Increasing access while maintaining high-quality care

Since its inception, Reunion has been providing ketamine-assisted psychotherapy, as well as psilocybin and MDMA-assisted psychotherapy through Health Canada’s Special Access Program.
